Bergamotto of Reggio Calabria
The Bergamot of Reggio Calabria is known to be an essential oil obtained from bergamot with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Bergamot is a particular citrus classified as Citrus Bergamia Risso, belonging to the Rutaceae family. From its skin we obtain an essence used for the production of perfumes, sweets and liqueurs. The essential oil of Bergamot is produced along the coastal strip that goes from Villa S. Giovanni to Gioiosa Jonica, between the Ionian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Reggio Calabria is the world’s largest producer of bergamot, with 90% of total production.
The local population uses Bergamot juice as a powerful digestive and is incredible for fighting cholesterol.
The Bergamot of Reggio Calabria is used in the cosmetic industry where it is used not only to fix the aromatic bouquet of the perfumes, but also to harmonize the other contained essences.
In the pharmaceutical industry, on the other hand, it is mainly used for its antiseptic and antibacterial power, especially in dentistry and gynecology.
There are many uses of the essence also in other sectors such as that of pipe tobaccos, candied fruit and tea. In recent years, the product has been used with great success in tanning salons with the addition of a sunscreen.
